Luxury vinyl plank has become the dominant flooring choice in DallasβFort Worth over the last five years, and for good reason in many applications. But as a tile installer who works alongside flooring contractors regularly, I want to give you an honest comparison β not from someone trying to sell you one material, but from someone who works with both.
Where LVP Wins
LVP's advantages are real and significant in certain applications:
- Continuous flooring across rooms: LVP transitions perfectly between living areas because planks run wall-to-wall without grout lines or height changes. This is a genuine aesthetic advantage in open-plan homes.
- Comfort underfoot: LVP has a softer, warmer feel than tile. This matters significantly in bedrooms, living rooms, and areas where people walk barefoot frequently.
- Installation speed: A click-lock LVP floor installs roughly 40% faster than tile, which means lower labor costs.
- Texas temperature swings: Texas sees dramatic temperature swings between summer and winter. LVP's floating installation accommodates expansion and contraction without cracking, which matters in unconditioned spaces.
Where Tile Wins
For bathrooms and kitchens specifically, tile has advantages LVP cannot match:
- Showers: LVP cannot be used in showers. Period. Any contractor who suggests otherwise is misinformed or trying to cut corners. Shower walls and floors must use tile (or other properly waterproofed materials). This alone means tile skills are non-negotiable for any full bathroom.
- True longevity: Quality porcelain tile installed correctly will last 50+ years with zero replacement. LVP, even premium products, typically carries 25β30 year warranties and shows wear sooner in high-traffic areas. The lifetime cost of tile is lower if you plan to stay in the home long-term.
- Heat resistance: Tile performs better near stoves, cooktops, and in outdoor-adjacent kitchens. LVP can soften or deform under sustained heat.
- Authenticity of natural materials: If you're using real marble, travertine, or slate β there's no LVP equivalent. The material itself has value.
β
Tile: Better For
- Showers (only option)
- High-traffic commercial floors
- Outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces
- Luxury bathrooms with natural stone
- Long-term investment properties

- Open-plan continuous flooring
- Budget-conscious full-home installs
- Rental properties (faster turnaround)
- Homes with dogs (warmer underfoot)
"For a full bathroom renovation, the answer is almost always: tile for the floor and shower, LVP for the adjacent bedroom hallway. Using the right material for each application beats fighting the tradeoffs."
At Premier Tile Works, we focus on tile β it's what we do best. But we'll give you an honest answer at the estimate about which surfaces genuinely benefit from tile vs. where LVP is a perfectly good choice. Our goal is the right outcome for your home, not selling the most tile.
