Home EV Charger Installation
Portland, OR

Portland's leading residential EV charger installer. Lisa Chen has completed 600+ Level 2 charger installs across the Portland metro โ€” more than any other electrician on our team. Oregon rebates available.

Why Every EV Owner Should Install a Level 2 Charger

Most EVs come with a Level 1 "trickle charger" that plugs into a standard outlet. It works โ€” but barely. Here's the difference a Level 2 install makes:

FeatureLevel 1 Charger (Included with EV)Level 2 Charger (Professional Install)
Power Supply120V standard outlet240V dedicated circuit
Charge Rate3โ€“5 miles of range per hour25โ€“35 miles of range per hour
Full Charge (60 kWh battery)20โ€“30 hours6โ€“8 hours (overnight)
Cost to InstallNone (uses existing outlet)$450โ€“$1,200 (often offset by rebates)
Oregon Rebate AvailableNoYes โ€” up to $500 from PGE/Pacific Power

How EV Charger Installation Works

1

Free Panel Assessment

Lisa visits your home and checks your existing panel capacity. If your panel needs a 200A upgrade first (required for 48A EVSE circuits), she'll quote both together. About 40% of Portland homes need a panel upgrade before EV charger install.

2

Charger Selection

We work with all major brands (ChargePoint, JuiceBox, Grizzl-E, Tesla Wall Connector) and help you pick the right amperage for your EV โ€” typically 32A, 40A, or 48A circuits. We recommend level 2 chargers in the $350โ€“$700 range for most homeowners.

3

Permit & Rebate Applications

We pull the electrical permit and help you fill out the PGE or Pacific Power rebate application โ€” submitted before the install so you're in the system.

4

Installation Day

Most EV charger installs take 2โ€“4 hours. We run the circuit from your panel, mount the charger in your garage (or outdoors, if preferred), and test with your actual vehicle before we leave.

5

Inspection & Rebate Follow-Up

City inspection is scheduled and completed. We send you the inspection record and follow up on your rebate status within 30 days to make sure you receive your incentive.

EV Charger FAQ

Not always โ€” it depends on your existing panel capacity and the charger amperage you want. If your 100A panel has available capacity (usually fewer than 8โ€“10 circuits), a 32A or 40A EV charger circuit may be possible. However, if you want a 48A charger (the fastest residential option), you'll typically need a 200A panel. Lisa assesses your panel load during the free estimate โ€” about 40% of Portland homes need an upgrade, and 60% don't.
EV charger installation in Portland typically costs $450โ€“$1,200, depending on how far your panel is from your garage, whether conduit is needed through finished walls, and the circuit amperage. If you also need a panel upgrade, add $1,800โ€“$3,200. With PGE rebates ($500) and the federal 30% tax credit, the net cost is often $300โ€“$700 for the charger install alone. We provide itemized estimates that show you exactly what you'll spend and what you'll get back.
Technically yes, if you're a licensed electrician. Practically, no โ€” unless you want to lose your rebate eligibility (utilities require licensed installation), void your EV charger warranty, and risk a code violation. The Oregon PGE rebate explicitly requires a licensed electrician to complete the install. The federal tax credit also requires professional installation documentation. Given that rebates + tax credits can cover 50โ€“80% of the install cost, DIY rarely makes financial sense.
We're brand-agnostic and work with whatever the homeowner prefers โ€” but we most commonly install ChargePoint Home Flex, JuiceBox 40, Grizzl-E Classic, and Tesla Wall Connector. For non-Tesla EVs: ChargePoint Home Flex is our top pick (adjustable amperage, good app). For Tesla: the Tesla Wall Connector is the best fit. We can supply the charger or you can purchase your own โ€” either way works.
Yes โ€” most Level 2 chargers are rated for outdoor installation. We install outdoor chargers frequently for homeowners without garages or with carports. All outdoor EV charger circuits use weatherproof conduit, NEMA-rated enclosures, and GFCI protection as required by Oregon electrical code. We've installed chargers on patios, under carports, and on exterior walls โ€” all to code.
