After 14 years and 9,200+ Orlando homes, here's what we actually trust โ and what's just green marketing.
The eco-friendly cleaning product market has exploded, and so has the greenwashing. Products with botanical names, leaf logos, and "plant-based" labels range from genuinely effective to essentially useless โ and the marketing doesn't tell you which is which. After cleaning over 9,200 Orlando homes since 2012, our team has used hundreds of products in real conditions. Here's what we've found actually works.
A genuinely eco-friendly cleaning product meets several criteria: biodegradable surfactants, no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), no phosphates, no chlorine bleach, packaging that's recyclable or concentrated to reduce plastic use, and ingredients that don't bioaccumulate in waterways. "Plant-based" doesn't automatically mean any of these things โ some synthetic chemicals are safer than some plant-derived ones. Look for third-party certifications: EPA Safer Choice, USDA Certified Biobased, or Ecologo.
All-purpose cleaning: Branch Basics concentrate and Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner consistently outperform cheaper alternatives on Orlando's combination of humidity staining and general grime. Branch Basics is our personal recommendation for homes with children or pets โ zero fragrance, zero VOCs, genuinely effective.
Bathroom and tile: Better Life Natural Tub & Tile Cleaner handles soap scum and mild mildew well. For heavier mildew โ common in Orlando bathrooms โ we combine it with a steam treatment rather than moving to bleach-based products.
Floor cleaning: Method Squirt + Mop for hard floors. Concentrated, low residue, works well on both tile and hardwood without leaving a film that attracts dirt.
We want to be honest: there are applications where conventional products are genuinely superior to current eco alternatives. Heavy mold remediation on grout โ particularly in showers that have been neglected for months โ often requires an oxygen bleach treatment (sodium percarbonate, like OxiClean) that's harsher than plant-based options but is still far safer than chlorine bleach. And heavy protein stains on carpet (blood, pet waste) respond better to enzyme-based cleaners than pure surfactant formulas.
We switched our professional formulas to EPA Safer Choice certified products in 2020 and haven't looked back โ results are equivalent and our team is exposed to fewer chemicals on every job. Happy to recommend specific products for your home's situation.
